During an Arts League Michigan event, Knight Foundation President and CEO Alberto Ibarguen announced $5 million in grants to Detroit-area programs. “I want you to image for a moment that you are a sixth-grade child in a public school in Detroit and you will receive a one-hour-long program that is offered by the very best jazz musicians Detroit has to offer interfused with science in terms of how the wonderful sounds from their instrument actually reach the ears of the listener,” said Institute of Science Director Mike Stafford. The $1.8-million dollar gift they're receiving will aid a program with the Arts League of Michigan on various initiatives, the first of which Stafford has dubbed “Artology Detroit,” a fusion of art and science. The Detroit Connected Community Initiative received $810,000 to improve internet access in two low-income Detroit communities. Other Knight Foundations grants were awarded to Cranbrook, the College For Creative Studies, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, a United Way managed jobs program and the Detroit Public Library. |
